Brief History of the Nike Dunk
The Nike Dunk Low was created in 1985 for basketball. The first Nike dunks were only sold in a high top model and had very limited colors that mimicked the Jordan 1 . The reason it mimicked the original white, black, and red Jordan 1’s is because the Nike Dunk was actually created to be a more affordable version of the AJ1 ! Dunks are actually a combination of 4 classic Nike sneakers: the Air Jordan 1, The Air Force 1, the Nike Terminator, and the Nike Legend model. Nike mashed these 4 shoes together and this was what they came up with:
Nike Dunks Today
Nowadays, “Nike Dunks” is a household phrase. The popularity of the shoe skyrocketed in the 2020 and hasn’t slowed yet ! Nike still releases new styles and colors of this shoe almost on a monthly basis. Certain collaborations such as the one with the Grateful Dead Band and Nike have created shoes that are now worth upwards of 3 to 5 thousand dollars USD. However, dunks can be had as low as 90 dollars on Nike.com , and from third party sellers such as Goat and StockX. There are now about 100 different iterations of the Original Nike dunk. Most are simply different colors but others have unique features like platform soles.
Nike SB
Dunks were originally a basketball shoe but were adopted heavily by the skateboarding community over time. Now all Nike Dunks feature a Nike Sb tag which of course stands for Nike Skateboarding. Nike Dunk Lows in particular are great for skateboarding because they feature a thin sole that allows your foot to bend easily around the edges of the skateboard. This is great for flip tricks. The leather top of the shoe with bright colors and bold looks also fits seamlessly into skate culture. Skate fashion and culture is known for bold looks like baggy carpenter pants and large t-shirts. The true idea behind this is that skaters used to skate in old clothes and things they would find at local thrift stores so that they don’t thrash their actual clothes.
